Our Final Animation!

This is it, our teams final animation. Scary how 34 weeks ago we had no clue what we were doing, and he we are at the end of the semester with our first animated short. Where did the time go?! It’s still quite rough around the edges but i’m proud of  our team and what we’ve made together.

In terms of the feedback we received from two weeks back, we took all of that on board.

  • We fixed the lighting, making it somewhat more dramatic and spotlit.
  • We scrapped the music as we were told it just wasn’t working with the scene.
  • We managed to fix the face issue we were having by rendering out the scene a few times using different faces. Then putting the scenes back together.
  • Fixed the sound issue.

The Faces Issue

Eve got another message from Ronnie and he managed to help us with our face problem. He told us to render the scene out a few times using different faces. Then we can cut and edit them together later.

The Sun Like a Big Dark Animal

(El Sol Como un Gran Animal Oscuro)

This is an amination by “Bleeding Palm” an animation company and our group instantly fell in love with it. Mike shared this animation shortly after we presented so if this was aimed at us “Thank’s Mike! You saved us!” It was so similar to the style we were trying to convey. Eve actually emailed the creators and got them to have a look at the animation for us, and they actually had the answer to the face problem we were having.

Yolk Noir: First Draught

Here’s our first draft! We presented today and it was just one of those days where everything that could have gone wrong, went wrong… We were rendering our animation out in after affects on Eve’s computer, and once she finished we checked it and the sound was totally gone. When the animation was played when we presented it, it was broken and glitchy and just non cooperative all together. Love when that happens!  Ah well, we’re sorted now.

So once we presented, some of the feedback we got was that we should re-introduce the colour into our animation. Seeing as it was set in the 50’s, the 50’s were pretty much none for technicolour being made more and more available to everyone, so it would be a little illogical having a black and white animation set in a time where colour was exploding onto screens. So we have to fix that, and make things more stark. Contrast things more. I intend on doing this with light and use more spot lights to convey that film noir feel.

I’m also hoping to fix the character faces problem we’re having, instead of them just having static faces we could have them change.

My pieces of the Animation

So these past two weeks, i’ve been working away on the animation and it’s going pretty well so far. So far i’ve animated every scene bar Claire’s two scenes and the intro Eve did. So i’m happy enough with what i’ve put in.

Sound

So I put a soundtrack together so we can time our animation properly.

We’ve been animating alongside this track so things are looking pretty good at the moment!

All the sounds used were downloaded from https://www.freesound.org. Apart from the sounds made for Linda by Eve.

Each of the sounds used were:

Modelling the Hallway

As I started putting the hallway together, again i kept in mind how I could make it look like the 50’s. I started with the front door. One thing I noticed about doors in the 50’s was typically they’d have geometrical shapes as the windows. For example, squares going up in a line diagonally, circles. etc.

I also attempted to make the scene more home like, making it look like its been lived in by adding hats and bits and pieces along those lines. They ended up not making the final cut though because of the time constraints.

I also modelled the cabinet in the hall that the bowl Claire modelled sits on. I kept the same wallpaper as the rest of the rooms for consistency.

Updated Models and Faces

So claire redid the Andy/Linda models, and they look fantastic! Kirstin also provided me with a bunch of faces which I used to apply onto the models and they’re looking great!

They look great but the failed attempts look absolutely terrifying.

“End my suffering”

Here’s some of Kirstin’s faces on their own.

Kitchen Finished

So here’s our final kitchen model! Using the reference photos I talked about before I really tried to convey the 50’s esque atmosphere, not only through the kitchen itself but through the objects in the kitchen as well such as the fridge and oven etc.

Starting the Kitchen

I’ve made a start on modelling the kitchen and i really want to try and capture the 50’s feel. I looked at different reference photos and noticed that a popular trend back then was most of the furniture would have a colour and then a  white surface to accompany it.

I want our kitchen to be as close as these images as possible.
