Life Drawing Reflection

Unfortunately i couldn’t make the last life drawing class, so for this part of the assignment I’m going to be using two older pieces from a previous class.

As part of the analysis, I will be talking about balance, tension, perspective and motion.

Left Image Analysis/Reflection:

For the chair poses (image on the left), I think I’ve conveyed the sense of scale and perspective well using solid drawing techniques; Especially in the left drawing. We were taught in class to build the chair up out of cubes, and use horizon line in order to create depth within the drawings so this really helped nail the perspective.

Both drawings within the image on the left feel incomplete to me though, where the image on the left is built up much more with solid drawing the image on the right was more rushed. The drawing on the left feels more alive and has more believable proportions, this adds to the off-balance feeling of the piece. When drawing the model, i attempted to add weight and tension to convey the feeling of gravity within the piece by using the chair and cloth. I showed the body’s influence on the material and cushions by having the cloth fold around certain parts of the body. The are multiple points of tension in the drawing on the left such as in the toes that are pressed against the floor, and the model’s right arm, even though it isn’t seen in this piece you would know he is leaning against the chair.

Perspective is something I really need to work on, over time it’s something I’ve gotten better at but there’s a lot of room for improvement. In the left image, left drawing I feel that i’ve drawn the perspective much better than in the drawing on the right. In general i think the drawing on the right is the better drawing of the two.

To summarise the left image, I feel that I have done the perspective and body proportions well, the perspective shows the depth of the image and shows how all surfaces follow the horizon line, and also informs the viewer that how the model is leaning slightly to the right. It also conveys the models’ weight and its influence on the chair.

Right Image Analysis/Reflection:

Like the previous image, I feel that I have conveyed a sense of scale successfully by using the stick as reference, again I used solid drawing in order to build up the body in order to make it a more believable drawing. This also creates the feeling of there being motion and life within the drawing. The middle drawing shows the balance and tension. Because of the way the model has his feet cemented on the ground yet is bending forward, we see the tension and weight on his back because of the stick he is holding against himself. The same can be said about the drawing on its left, it looks like there is a lot of weight on  its shoulders creating tension.

Lighting and Tonality

This weeks lesson started with Michael asking us to look into comic book artists Neal Adams and Mort Drucker’s work as it will be beneficial for next week’s ink lesson. Below is some examples of their work.

Okay so now onto the actual lesson! This lesson began with some warm up poses, followed by some tonal studies of different parts of the body.

Life Drawing: 10 second poses and tonality

Today, Mike had us try to capture poses on the page in 10 seconds. To be honest, at first i really struggled with this because i was worrying to much about holding a solid figure but I realised that if i quickly got the line of action down i could then build a flowing shape around it that closely resembled the model. Definitely getting there. Making progress.

Tonal life drawing

Today mike taught us how to tone and shade correctly, really enjoyed this class! He started us off with drawing sphere’s and explained how light typically hit those types of surfaces, and then applied these rules to the model. I now have a way better understanding on how shading and light works.

Life Drawing and Group work

In today’s class we focused on perspective drawings, for example, how a pointed fingers’ shape could look different from certain perspectives. We also focused on using 3D shapes to simplify the drawing process such as drawing cubes, and using its proportions to simplify drawing complex shapes. We drew cubes and used those as a base for drawing chairs. We then applied this to the model drawing session.

To begin with the drawings were pretty dodgy, but after I was corrected on what I was doing wrong I began to understand how the shapes worked together in order to build the figure.

Once i got home i decided to start experimenting with different colour palettes, here’s a few below we’ve shortlisted. We’re hoping that we will be able to create pieces that will be limited to a set colour pallette that we have chosen to keep consistency within the pieces.

Life Drawings: Progress

Last night i tried sketching a couple of drawings from the handout sheets in preparation for this mornings life drawing class. Most of them turned out ok! And then there were the rest… (I tried…) Slowly but surely getting the hang of it.

For today’s class we looked at drawing still lifes and applying models to them after. For example we were taught how to draw objects such as chairs, and how we could use shapes such as cubes to simplify the drawing process. Then once we had gotten the hang of that we looked at applying the posed model to the chairs. The first few attempts didn’t work out too well but as always, the more i tried it the better I got. I surely wouldn’t have been able to do that before the class.

Life Drawings 2

Had another life drawings class today, it went much better than the first as i’m really starting to understand the basics of it. After another few lessons and practice I should have it all worked out no problem!

First Life Drawing Class

Today was our first Life Drawing class. Everyone walked in convinced we were doing sketches of winnie the pooh…  So a few people were quite pretty shocked to say the least! I thought it was really interesting, i found myself using new sketching techniques i had never used before and I noticed that my sketches were getting more accurate as the class progressed.
